Panel 1: Title text that says “Home and Gingerbread by Mal Jones.” Smaller text says “Based on “Hansel & Gretel “ by the Brothers Grimm.
Panel 2: Hansel yelling “Papa!” Hansel is around 10 or 11, with a knit cap and a jacket with rectangular buttons. His hands are on his cheeks and he’s crying as he yells.
Panel 3: In the background, with his back to us, Hansel is yelling “Papa! Come back!” In the foreground is his sister Gretel. Gretel is around 12 or 13. She’s got a mess of curly, knotty hair and a tired, angry look on her face. She’s glancing back at Hansel and saying “She made him do this. Again.” They are both in the woods.
Panel 4: They’re walking through the woods. Gretel has her hands in a pocket on her shirt. She is saying “I guess we’ll try this way.” Hansel is walking next to her, dropping breadcrumbs as he goes. He is saying “I hate the woods. So much.”
Panel 5: Closer on Hansel and Gretel. Gretel, looking stressed, says “I don’t know how to get us back.” Hansel, looking proud of himself, says “Don’t worry! I’ve got a plan!”
Panel 6: He holds up to pieces of bread that have chunks missing out of them. He says “I’ve been using bread to leave a trail! We can follow it home!”
Panel 7: Gretel looks doubtful as she looks back at the trail of breadcrumbs. A bird is snacking on it. Gretel says “Will it work?” Hansel says “Of course!”
Panel 8: Text at the stop says “Eight hours later”. Birds have eaten all the bread. Hansel and Gretel look at the birds despondently. Hansel says “It didn’t work.”
Panel 9: They are sitting amongst the trees. We’re looking at them from above. Gretel has her arm around Hansel. Hansel says “It seemed like a good idea.” Gretel says “I know. It’s ok.”
Panel 10: Close on Gretel’s face, with Hansel closing his eyes for a bit. Gretel says “Wait. Do you smell that?”
Panel 11: Gretel has run ahead a bit and is climbing over a log. She says “I think it’s coming from over here.” In the foreground, we see Hansel from behind. He says “It smells like…”
Panel 12: Hansel and Gretel look surprised and shocked. Hansel says “…gingerbread.” Gretel says “Woah.”
Panel 13: They’re looking at a small cottage with a curved triangular roof. The house is made up of small gingerbread siding. In the lawn are giant lollipops, candy canes, and gumdrops. Smoke is coming out of a small chimney on the roof. It looks cozy and delicious.
