Speak Out! with Speakers!

Speak Out!

Speak Out, a civic engagement project made as a collaboration between PBS KIDS (Nina, Gergs, Scoots and I were the internal team), National Black Programming Consortium, and the New Media Institute launched today.

The whole idea behind the project is that kids can submit ideas on how to improve 3 topics : Environment, Health, and Schools, and then other kids can vote on those ideas. At the end of the day (and by day I mean term of the project), the top ideas are sent off to President Obama as a letter. The letter part I'm a bit fuzzy on, just cause that's part of the larger group conversation. I was more of a strict designer/front end developer on this one.

Speaking of which: I designed, illustrated and built the Flash front end (Actionscript 3, oh dip) in the span of about 3 weeks from conception to innovation. Our usual development time is 12 weeks.

Speakers with Sneakers

At work I'm designing and building the front end for a project called Speak Out. It should launch Monday so I'll have more info about then, but I just wanted to through up the Speaker Army I've designed for it.

I love these little guys and gals.

Exchange of the Day

BISHOP: You know what I’m going to eat today? The same thing I had
yesterday, it was that good.

EAGLE: What did you have yesterday?

BISHOP: A Thanksgiving sandwich.

EAGLE: Where do they have Thanksgiving sandwiches?

JONES: Aw, he said that so wistfully!

BISHOP: Cosi! It’s got stuffing and cranberries and—

EAGLE: I had a Thanksgiving sandwich once and I thought, ‘Why aren’t all
sandwiches Thanksgiving sandwiches?’

BISHOP: I know! I said, why are these only for a limited time? I guess
because Cranberries are only available in November. Even in the grocery
store, the rest of the year, they’re like ‘nope!’

EAGLE: Except in raisin-flavoring form.

JONES: Yeah, but those are gross. Nobody actually likes them. They just
think they’re healthy and good.

NINA: What is? Cranberry sauce?

JONES: No, Craisins. See! Look at that face.

NINA: They’re good in trail mix.

JONES: I guess so.

BISHOP: Yeah, but you could put thumbtacks in trail mix and it’d probably taste great.

JONES: I hate trail mix.

BISHOP: But what do you eat on the trail?

JONES: I don’t know: hot dogs?

PBS Parents 3.0

Posted in Work » Day Job on August 20, 2008 at 8:21 PM

Today marked the launch of the New PBS Parents.

We re-did the entire site, from front to back, along with the help of The Incredible Pear. We integrated Movable Type, cleaned up the XHTML and the CSS, and brought a new brand look to the whole sha-bang.

Now for most folks this is just another day on the job, but for us? It was the work of 3 regular regular staff members, one contractor, two interns, and two part time temps... for a 1900 page site. And for me, it's the reason for a very long summer and many late nights.

We're really proud of it. Stop by and say hello: http://www.pbsparents.org
